Can the weighbridge withstand harsh environments like heat, dust, mud, and heavy rain?

If you've ever run a mining site in Zambia's Copperbelt, a cement plant in Kenya's dry interior, or a farm near Tanzania's humid coast, you know the drill. Equipment that works perfectly in a brochure often starts complaining within months once real Africa gets to it.

Heat, dust, mud, and rain sometimes all in the same day. So the question isn't just "can this weighbridge handle harsh environments?" It's "how long before something breaks?"

At Fujian Fangda Weighbridge Manufacturer, China, we've been building and installing truck scales across Afca for years. Here's what we've learned about making them survive.

First, the steel itself matters not just the thickness.

A lot of buyers focus on deck thickness: "Is it 10mm or 12mm?" But in harsh conditions, the real killer is corrosion, not weight. Africa's coastal humidity (Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, Lagos) eats through ordinary paint in 1218 months. We've seen scales that looked fine on top but had rust blooming from the inside of the beams.

What we do differently:  

- Anti-rust coating system: three layers epoxy primer, intermediate, and polyurethane topcoat. Total dry film thickness above 200 microns. Standard paint on cheap scales is often 80100 microns.  

- Galvanized options for coastal sites: hot-dip galvanizing adds 57 years of corrosion life. Costs about 1520% more upfront, but saves a full repaint in year three.  

- Sealed beam ends: open beam ends trap moisture and dust. We fully weld and seal them. Simple, but many manufacturers skip it.

Second, load cells the part that actually breaks first.

In our experience from Zambian mines, load cell failure is the #1 reason a scale goes offline. Dust gets into the cable gland. Water seeps through a tiny crack. Or a lightning strike nearby fries the electronics.

We use:  

- IP68 or IP69K rated load cells (not IP67 that's not enough for standing water or pressure washing)  

- Stainless steel bodies for mining and coastal applications mild steel cells corrode from the outside in  

- Double sealing at cable entry with heat-shrink and silicone

Real number: an IP68 stainless steel load cell in a well-drained surface-mounted scale typically lasts 68 years in a Zambian mine. An IP67 mild steel cell in the same site? 1824 months. I've pulled out both.

Third, junction boxes the hidden weak point.

The junction box is where all load cell cables meet. If it's not sealed, dust and moisture get in, and your readings start drifting. On a pit scale with poor drainage, we've seen junction boxes completely submerged for days.

Our fix:  

- Stainless steel IP68 junction box not the cheap plastic or painted steel ones  

- Filled with silica gel packs (replace annually) or fully potted with resin for extreme sites  

- Mount above ground whenever possible even on a pit scale, we run cables up to a wall-mounted box

Fourth, what about dust and mud?

Mining sites in Zambia and DRC generate fine, abrasive dust that gets everywhere. Mud from seasonal rains cakes onto the scale deck and around load cells.

Design choices that work:  

- No exposed bolts or crevices where mud can pack and trap moisture smooth surfaces only  

- Rubber seals between deck sections cheap scales use no seals, mud falls through and piles up underneath  

- Easy-access cleanout gaps we leave a 50-70mm gap under the deck so you can hose mud out without lifting the scale

One customer in Kitwe told me: "Before Fangda, we spent half a day every month jacking up the scale to shovel out mud. Now we just spray water under it. Done in 30 minutes."

Fifth, heat.

Air temperatures in parts of Kenya and Sudan can hit 40-45°C. Asphalt or concrete ground gets even hotter 60-70°C surface temperature. Cheap load cells start drifting when the electronics overheat.

We specify:  

- Operating temperature range -30°C to +70°C for load cells (most cheap ones top out at 50°C)  

- Thermal expansion gaps in the deck without them, steel expands and jams against the approach ramps  

- Light-colored paint (optional) reflects heat, keeps deck surface 1015°C cooler than dark grey

So, real-world lifespan in Africa?

Bottom line:

A weighbridge is a 10-15 year investment. Cutting corners on corrosion protection, load cell seals, or junction box quality saves you maybe 1020% upfront but you'll pay double in downtime and repairs within three years.

If you're buying for a mine, a coastal port, or anywhere with rain and dust, ask your supplier these three questions:  

1. What's the exact IP rating of your load cells and junction box?  

2. Is your paint system three-layer or single coat?  

3. Show me a photo of a unit after two years in a similar climate.

If they hesitate or give vague answers walk away.
