If you run a logistics fleet, a mine, a farm, or a factory somewhere in Africa from Zambia to Kenya, Nigeria to Tanzania choosing the right weighbridge capacity is one of those decisions that will hit your pocket for years. Get it wrong, and you either face breakdowns every few months, or you waste cash on a scale far bigger than you'll ever need.

Here's what we've learned from supplying and installing hundreds of truck scales across Africa at Fangda (we're based in Fujian, China).

First, know what's actually running on your site.

Most commercial trucks in Africa fall into a few common weight brackets:

Real-world data from our installations in Zambia's Copperbelt:  

A 30-ton scale used for 80 weighings/day of 20-ton trucks typically lasts 810 years with normal maintenance. But put 40-ton mining trucks on that same scale daily the load cells fail within 18 months, and the steel deck starts cracking in year two. That's not a guess; we've seen it happen.

Second, look at your daily weighing frequency.

Capacity isn't just about peak weight it's about fatigue. A 100-ton scale weighing 20-ton trucks 200 times a day will actually outlast an 80-ton scale doing the same job, because the 100-ton version uses thicker steel and higher-rated load cells (e.g., 50t cells vs 30t cells). The upfront cost difference? Typically 1520% more. But downtime for repairs in a busy mine can cost you $500$1,500 per hour.

Third, always leave a buffer.

We recommend 2030% headroom above your heaviest expected load. Why? Because overload happens. A truck that's supposed to carry 35 tons might roll in at 42 tons due to wet ore or an overeager loader. If your scale maxes out at 60t, that's fine. But if you only bought a 50t scale, you're already in the danger zone.

Fourth, consider the environment.

Hot, dusty mines in northern Zambia. Humid, salty air near Mombasa port. Muddy farms in Uganda. For harsh conditions, we always suggest:

- 80-ton or 100-ton for mining and bulk transport (with IP68 or IP69K load cells)

- 60-ton is okay for agricultural produce, but only if the scale has a proper anti-corrosion paint system

- 30-ton mostly for internal factory use or light fleets not for public road enforcement

What about cost vs. value?

An 80-ton scale costs roughly 30% more than a 60-ton scale but lasts nearly twice as long in heavy use. That's why most of our clients in Zambia's mining sector skip 60t entirely and start at 80t.

Bottom line:
