Cheap scales with low-quality load cells often drift to ±1% after a year. That's 400 kg error on a 40-ton truck. On bulk commodities like cement, grain, or fuel, that adds up fast.

1. Temperature changes – Load cells contain strain gauges and electronics. Cheap cells have poor temperature compensation. Morning vs afternoon can shift readings by 0.2–0.3% on a hot day. We've seen it happen in Kenya's Rift Valley – 15°C at dawn, 35°C at noon. That's enough to cause disputes with suppliers.
2. Dirt and debris under the deck – A surface-mounted scale sits on steel beams. Mud, rocks, or spilled material can pile up underneath, pushing up on the deck and creating false weight. - Pick one truck that you weigh regularly. Same truck, same load type (e.g., always about 70% full).
- Weigh it first thing in the morning, same day each month.
- Write down the weight.
- If it changes by more than 0.3% from the previous month – or more than 0.5% from the original calibration – call for a service check.

A technician brings certified test weights – usually metal blocks of known mass, totalling at least 50% of the scale's capacity (e.g., 40 tons for an 80-ton scale). They place these weights in different positions (center, corners, edges) and adjust the indicator until the reading matches the known weight.
Cost varies by country and travel distance, but expect roughly:
- Local tech in major city: $300–$600 per visit
- Travel to remote mine or farm: $800–$1,500 (including transport and overnight stay)

No, the scale itself works the same way. The RFID system just identifies the truck and driver. But one advantage of a digital weighbridge with RFID is that you can track weight data per vehicle over time. If Truck A always reads 100 kg heavier than Truck B with the same product, you might have a calibration issue – or you might have a driver who knows how to cheat the scale (e.g., parking with one wheel off the deck). The data tells you to investigate.
