The big range: 3 years vs 15+ years

- Cheap, poorly protected scale in harsh conditions: often shows major problems at 3–4 years. Load cells fail, decks bend, rust takes hold. By year 5, many are scrapped or need a $10,000+ overhaul.
- Wellbuilt scale with proper spec and maintenance: regularly reaches 12–15 years. Some reinforced units in moderate mines are still running at 18 years with only load cell and indicator replacements.
Real example: Two 80ton scales installed at two different sites in the same Zambian mining region in 2012. One was a budget unit with IP67 cells, 8mm deck, no galvanizing. By 2016, it had three load cell failures and visible deck sag. It was replaced in 2018. What actually kills a mining scale – with numbers
1. Overload – the 1 killer
A mine running 100ton trucks on an 80ton scale. Every day, the structure sees 125% of its rated load. Stress fractures start at load cell mounts. Deck deflection increases. Load cells fatigue faster.
Data: A scale operating at 120% of rated capacity loses 40–50% of its expected structural life compared to the same scale at 90% load. A reinforced scale with 20–30% safety margin (e.g., 100ton scale for 80ton trucks) typically lasts 23x longer.
2. Heat – not just air temperature
Ground surface temperature in a sunny African mine can hit 6070°C. Steel expands. Load cells without wide temperature compensation drift. Cheap paint bubbles and peels.
What works: Load cells rated -30°C to +70°C. Threelayer epoxy/polyurethane paint (200+ microns). Lightcolored topcoat reflects heat – keeps deck 1015°C cooler than dark grey. In one Ugandan cement plant, switching to light grey paint reduced midday deck temperature from 78°C to 63°C.
3. Dust and moisture – the slow poison
Mining dust is abrasive and often slightly acidic (especially in copper areas). It gets into junction boxes, cable glands, and load cell cavities. If the seal rating is only IP65 or IP66, dust finds a way in – and once it combines with humidity, corrosion starts.
Number: IP67 cells in a dusty mine typically fail in 2–3 years. IP68 stainless cells in the same environment last 6–8 years. The price difference per cell is about $30–$50. Over 8 cells, that’s $240–$400. Over 8 years, that small upfront saves you $1,500–$2,500 in replacement costs plus downtime.
4. Poor foundation and drainage
A scale can be built like a tank, but if one corner settles 10mm over time, the load distribution goes uneven. That overloads two load cells while the other two float. Those two cells will fail early.
Fix: Use reinforced concrete with rebar, compacted base, and a site survey before pouring. Install drains so water never pools under the scale. We’ve seen foundation issues cut scale life by 5–7 years.

1. Buy the right capacity
Don’t “just fit” today’s trucks. Leave 2030% headroom. If your heaviest truck is 70 tons, buy 100 tons. The extra $2,000–$4,000 upfront will pay back many times in avoided repairs.
2. Insist on IP68 stainless load cells
Nonnegotiable for mines, coastal sites, or anywhere with rain or dust.
3. Galvanize if you’re near the coast or in acidic dust
Hotdip galvanizing adds 8–10 years of corrosion protection. It costs about 15–20% extra – far cheaper than replacing a rusted deck in year 4.
4. Build a proper foundation
Not just a slab. Get a geotech check if soil is soft. Use our detailed drawing. Install drains. This one step alone can add 3–5 years to scale life.
5. Simple monthly maintenance
Clean mud from under the deck. Check the junction box for moisture (replace silica gel annually). Test-weigh a known truck. Listen for strange creaks.

6. Keep critical spares locally
One load cell and one junction box on your shelf. When something fails, you swap it the same day, not wait weeks. The spare investment: $300–$500. The cost of 2 weeks downtime: $10,000–$50,000 in lost production.
