In Zambia’s Copperbelt, or on the Katanga Plateau in the DRC, thousands of tonnes of ore roll across weighbridges every day. The figure that pops up in that split second determines your daily output, your month-end reconciliation, and even your profits for the whole year. But have you ever stopped to think—what if that figure itself is unreliable?

I’ve seen far too many mine owners who, when selecting a weighbridge, focus solely on the price, comparing one model after another, only to settle on the one offering the ‘best value for money’. And what happens? Within half a year, come the rainy season, the sensors get waterlogged and the readings start fluctuating wildly; once the rainy season was over, dust would seep into the junction boxes, requiring recalibration every few days. Worse still, when you tried to order spare parts from the manufacturer, they’d either say ‘we’re out of stock’ or ‘you’ll have to wait two months’. Only then did you realise that the few ten thousand you’d saved back then wasn’t nearly enough to cover the losses from a single day’s downtime.

Today, I won’t be preaching; I’ll just discuss three of the most easily overlooked ‘pitfalls’ . If you’re currently selecting a weighbridge for a mining site, these three points will help you avoid eight or nine out of ten potential problems.

1: Rated at 100 tonnes, but can only actually handle 80 tons

Many weighbridges have a nameplate stating ‘maximum capacity 100 tonnes’, but that’s a theoretical value obtained in a laboratory—under conditions of uniform loading, no impact and no off-centre loading. However, in a real mining site, fully laden lorries rush onto the weighbridge, causing shifts in centre of gravity, sudden braking and jolting—the instantaneous impact forces far exceed the rated value. If the structure is designed for 100 tonnes, its actual long-term load-bearing capacity may be little more than 80 tonnes.

What’s the solution? Choose a model with a rated capacity at least one tier higher. For example, if the heaviest vehicle you routinely weigh is 90 tonnes, opt for a weighbridge with a capacity of 120 tonnes or even 150 tonnes. That extra margin isn’t a waste; it’s a safety buffer. At the same time, pay close attention to the steel grade of the main beams—is it Q235 or Q345? Is the welding process automatic submerged arc welding or manual spot welding? These details directly determine whether the weighbridge will last three years or ten. Do not expect thin steel plates to withstand hundreds of passes a day in a mining area; that defies the laws of physics.

2: Dust and Rain – Far More Devastating Than You Imagine

You might think that ‘dustproof and waterproof’ simply means applying a bit more sealant or fitting a cover, right? But the dust in a mining area isn’t ordinary dust; it’s fine ore powder with abrasive properties that can penetrate any crevice and adhere to circuit boards, gradually causing short circuits. Meanwhile, moisture during the rainy season seeps in through the most inconspicuous places—such as cable joints, junction box covers and sensor lead wires—and by the time you notice the readings drifting, the internal circuitry will already be riddled with rust.

A reliable solution is actually quite straightforward: first, you must use fully sealed, welded digital sensors with a protection rating of at least IP68 (IP69K is even better). These sensors are nitrogen-filled and have no vent holes, so dust and moisture simply cannot get in. Second, choose junction boxes made of stainless steel with sealing gaskets, and ideally, have them potted with resin. Thirdly, the instrument must incorporate built-in lightning protection and voltage stabilisation functions—the power grid in mining areas is often unstable, and a single lightning strike can burn out the entire system. Don’t ask me how I know; far too many people have fallen into this trap.

3: The person who sells to you may not care about your future well-being

This is the thing that baffles me the most. Many Chinese manufacturers simply ship the goods to the port, collect the final payment, and then never respond again. If you ask them how to buy spare parts, they’ll say, ‘Contact a local agent’; if you ask where the agent is, they’ll say, ‘We’re currently in talks’. When you’re in urgent need, you’ll have no choice but to fly to Guangzhou yourself to hunt for spare parts—the shipping costs are more expensive than the parts themselves, and you simply can’t afford to waste the time.

When selecting a supplier, you must clarify the following points: Firstly, do they have a stock warehouse in Africa? Even if it’s just a distribution point run by a partner, as long as they can dispatch goods within a week, that’s sufficient. Secondly, do they provide remote commissioning and diagnostic services? With today’s advanced internet connectivity, a good engineer can connect to your instruments via a 4G module to view data and troubleshoot faults remotely, saving you the time and hassle of a long journey. Third, do they provide detailed installation manuals and video tutorials in Chinese or English? Do they commit to training local electricians? These aren’t perks; they’re the basics.

If you find a manufacturer willing to specify in the contract that they’ll ‘respond to technical enquiries within 48 hours’ and ‘dispatch spare parts within 15 days’, they’re generally reliable. Conversely, if the other party merely says, ‘The quality is excellent; rest assured’, tell them to rest assured a hundred times over—you certainly won’t be able to.

It is the eyes of the mining site and a barometer of cash flow. If you choose the wrong one, it won’t save you money—it’ll be a constant source of loss. If you choose the right one, it will work quietly for years, or even decades, without ever causing a hitch, to the point where you’ll almost forget it’s there.
