The ideal approach is to commission a local geotechnical engineer to carry out a simple survey before pouring the concrete, to at least ascertain the water table and the soil’s bearing capacity. Only with this data, combined with the load diagrams provided by the manufacturer, can the reinforcement density and foundation thickness be determined.
The drainage system is an aspect that is frequently underestimated. Although the rainy season in Kenya is concentrated, rainfall is substantial, particularly in the west and along the coast. Should water accumulate and saturate the foundations, this may lead to uneven settlement over time, causing the sensors to become misaligned and resulting in erratic readings. Whilst many installation manuals include diagrams of drainage ditches, during actual construction, the gradient, direction of the outlets and plans for routine cleaning are often overlooked. I recommend installing open drains on both sides of the foundation, ensuring that the drainage outlets are situated well away from the structure, whilst also providing access hatches to facilitate the removal of silt before and after the rainy season. This investment will save you countless headaches with levelling in the future.
Calibration is not a ‘one-off’ task, but a regular health check
Kenyan metrology regulations and industry standards typically require weighbridges to be calibrated using certified test weights, with clearly defined calibration intervals. In reality, however, many users calibrate their equipment only once during installation and then consider the matter settled. In reality, sensors, junction boxes and indicators are subject to drift caused by temperature fluctuations, vehicle impact and the passage of time. Particularly in Kenya, where there are significant daily temperature variations, thermal expansion and contraction can cause subtle deformations in the steel structure and sensors. Conducting off-centre load and linearity checks every six months or every quarter can effectively prevent cumulative errors. There are a handful of metrology service companies in Nairobi and Mombasa that offer rental or on-site calibration services, but the costs are considerable and advance booking is required. A better approach is to clarify with the manufacturer at the time of purchase: do they provide a detailed on-site calibration procedure? Can substitute weights (such as materials of known weight) be used for preliminary verification? Does remote guidance cover the calibration process? Experienced manufacturers will set out the calibration steps clearly, perhaps even providing video guidance, so that your local technicians can carry out the procedure.
The convenience of digital weighbridges goes beyond just presenting neat data
An increasing number of Kenyan users are now opting for digital weighbridges for a very practical reason: faster fault diagnosis. If a problem arises with traditional analogue load cells, you have to test them one by one, which is time-consuming and labour-intensive; digital systems can directly display the status of each load cell and even indicate which angle is producing abnormal output. This is particularly important at remote sites in Kenya, where a single trip for a technician can take an entire day. Combined with remote monitoring software, you can even view real-time weights and fault alerts on your mobile phone, enabling you to detect early signs of load cell ageing or damage caused by lightning strikes.
Of course, digital systems place higher demands on power supply stability. As voltage fluctuations are common in some parts of Kenya, it is advisable to install a voltage stabiliser and surge protection. You should confirm with the manufacturer during the procurement process whether these are included as standard.
